As the days get longer and warmer, I'm sure you are finding that your dog is beginning to shed all over the place. Dogs loose their winter coats at this time and it's very important to help remove the shed hair. If you don't, it will matt, and at some point you might have to shave off your dog's hair.
Double coated breeds like German Shepherds, Labs, Goldens, Huskies and similar types will benefit from the use of a tool called a Furminator. It comes in various sizes. You can see how it works in the video above. You can remove a huge amount of hair with this tool, in some cases, enough to make a whole other dog!
Other breeds, such as Poodles and Yorkies will shed, but because of the nature of the coat, the dead hair will remain in the coat and cause matting. These breeds do well with a slicker brush.
Wash and condition your dog before brushing, if possible. This will help to loosen the hair and keep the skin clean.
Do not bear down too hard on the tool or repeat on the same spot for a long time. It is possible to scrape the skin.
The dog pictured below has been neglected and it was necessary to shave off the coat. With regular brushing, your dog never has to get to this point.
So keep up the good work! Next time we will talk about fleas, because, IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR! LOL
